Summary

The universe began as an enormous breath being held。

From the acclaimed author of Stories of Your Life and Others — the basis for the Academy Award-nominated film Arrival — comes a ground-breaking new collection of short fiction: nine stunningly original, provocative, and poignant stories。 These are tales that tackle some of humanity's oldest questions along with new quandaries only Ted Chiang could imagine。

In "The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate", a portal through time forces a fabric seller in ancient Baghdad to grapple with past mistakes and second chances。 In "Exhalation", an alien scientist makes a shocking discovery with ramifications that are literally universal。 In "Anxiety Is the Dizziness of Freedom" the ability to glimpse into alternate universes necessitates a radically new examination of the concepts of choice and free will。

Including stories being published for the first time as well as some of his rare and classic uncollected work, Exhalation is Ted Chiang at his best: profound, sympathetic — revelatory。

It was very good。 Not too many things happening at once, like some dystopian/fantasy’s have。 And I was very shocked at some points the plot twists were good。 I liked that the characters found it as unusual as I did, because sometimes if the characters are completely used to really out-of-the-ordinary things then I forget what’s what。

2。5A fun read because I enjoy revisiting the Percy Jackson series every now and again but I didn't understand a few things。 Specifically why the characters looked 18 instead of 12? 2。5A fun read because I enjoy revisiting the Percy Jackson series every now and again but I didn't understand a few things。 Specifically why the characters looked 18 instead of 12? 。。。more

Meh, it was OK。 I think this graphic series would be fun for someone who has already read the novels, but is hard to follow for someone who hasn't。 Meh, it was OK。 I think this graphic series would be fun for someone who has already read the novels, but is hard to follow for someone who hasn't。 。。。more

Look, I never thought I would be giving this book only 3 stars when I started this book。 I really like Graphic Novels and I LOVE Percy Jackson。 I've read and re-read the series dozens of times since I first discovered it in middle school。 It's my go-to series for a re-read every time I need something to cheer me up because Percy's sass and humor in the midst of life and death situations never fail to bring a smile。 So, I figured, what could be more potent than a combo of the two?But somehow, the Look, I never thought I would be giving this book only 3 stars when I started this book。 I really like Graphic Novels and I LOVE Percy Jackson。 I've read and re-read the series dozens of times since I first discovered it in middle school。 It's my go-to series for a re-read every time I need something to cheer me up because Percy's sass and humor in the midst of life and death situations never fail to bring a smile。 So, I figured, what could be more potent than a combo of the two?But somehow, there was a。。。。 disconnect? while reading the graphic novel。 Overlooking the exclusion of key incidents from the book, there was a serious lack of humor (probably because it wasn't in the first-person PoV like the novels) and character development。 Also, Luke's motivations what? Is that even important? The art style was also very disconcerting and did not make me feel I was looking at 12 y/o kids。 What even have they done to my poor boy Percy? While it's not all bad and might work for others, as someone who loves and does artwork, I was probably expecting a much more refined art style and depiction。 Here's how I picture Percy and Annabeth in the first book:artist: minuikoand later artist: @smoustartI would suggest that you read the novels first to get an idea of the plot and character development ( and also enjoy some of that excellent humor!) and then pick up the graphic novels for a re-read because they're kinda action-heavy but contain the gist of the story。While the novel will always be a 5 star read, the graphic novel just didn't click for me。 。。。more

A good adaptation for lower or reluctant readers。

3。9 to 4。0 starsNot as bad as the movie adaption。 It somehow helped me conceptualize some stuffs from the book。 What a fine illustration!

I haven’t read the Percy Jackson books (I know, I know), but someone gave me the graphic novel so I thought I’d read it first。 I feel like they left out a lot of plot points because this was very choppy- almost to the point to be unreadable。 The illustrations are fine, but Percy does NOT look like a 12 yr old。

They skipped some major plot points from the book, and the illustration was sometimes a little lazy, but all in all it was quite satisfying。

tPercy Jackson thinks he's a normal 12 year old who has dyslexia and ADHD until he gets attacked by a teacher on a school trip and finds out he is the son of a god。 He travels to a camp filled with other demigods where he gets sent on a quest for Zeus' stolen lightning bolt。 So begins Percy Jackson's journey fighting angry gods and all kinds of mythical creatures。 I Thought that The Lightning Thief: The Graphic Novel by Rick Riordan was a great overall book。 I had previously read the original Pe tPercy Jackson thinks he's a normal 12 year old who has dyslexia and ADHD until he gets attacked by a teacher on a school trip and finds out he is the son of a god。 He travels to a camp filled with other demigods where he gets sent on a quest for Zeus' stolen lightning bolt。 So begins Percy Jackson's journey fighting angry gods and all kinds of mythical creatures。 I Thought that The Lightning Thief: The Graphic Novel by Rick Riordan was a great overall book。 I had previously read the original Percy Jackson series and really enjoyed it。 The graphic novel version of it was just as good as it。 It made it easier to follow along and understand exactly what the creatures in the book looked like and what they were doing。 It was also very similar to the original book and seemed to me like more of a long summary of the original。 I love the art and how easy it is to read。 I only had to spend like maybe a half hour to finish it。 I think that the intended audience is around middle school aged kids that may find it difficult to read the full percy jackson book。 It is an easier alternative to reading the full book while still giving the full story。 。。。more

it's good, but percy looks like he's twenty。 the art is amazing, the story not quite so good, it is better than the movies, at least, but not so good as the books。 it's good, but percy looks like he's twenty。 the art is amazing, the story not quite so good, it is better than the movies, at least, but not so good as the books。 。。。more

I don't think I ever DNF'ed a graphic novel after a few pages just because I didn't like the art。 But I know the story already so 'rereading' it in a visual way means that the art has to appeal to me。It really really really didn't。 I don't think I ever DNF'ed a graphic novel after a few pages just because I didn't like the art。 But I know the story already so 'rereading' it in a visual way means that the art has to appeal to me。It really really really didn't。 。。。more

It is fine for someone who hasn't read the series before。 A lot of scenes have been taken out and the end is slightly different from the original。 It was still a good quick read, though the art style wasn't my favourite。 It is fine for someone who hasn't read the series before。 A lot of scenes have been taken out and the end is slightly different from the original。 It was still a good quick read, though the art style wasn't my favourite。 。。。more

Sadly some of my favourite scenes were cut and the art is not really my thing。 Because of the shorter dialogues the characters seem flat but it does its job if you're mainly reading it for the nostalgia Sadly some of my favourite scenes were cut and the art is not really my thing。 Because of the shorter dialogues the characters seem flat but it does its job if you're mainly reading it for the nostalgia 。。。more

I have read the books and love them。 I’m super excited for the Disney+ show。 In anticipation, I decided to pick up the graphic novelization。 Sadly, I wasn’t a fan of the art。 The characters looked aged and some settings didn’t match to what I had in my mind。 Plus, I felt that the plot was too condensed and certain things I remember are left off。 I’ll probably give the second volume a try and see if I’ll continue from there。 I hope to really hear that fun tone come through and redeem itself。

I didn't love the changes from the original novel。 Why were the characters drawn to look like older teenagers and not the 12 year olds they are? Why did they skip some important plot points? Why did they skip over the humor of Percy? Why is there no birth of Percebeth? Overall, it was ok, but if I hadn't read the novel I would think the Percy Jackson stories were pretty boring。 I didn't love the changes from the original novel。 Why were the characters drawn to look like older teenagers and not the 12 year olds they are?

Ben Peters

It is an ok summary of the actual book, much better than the movie。

I didn't really like this adaptation。 Mostly I didn't like the artwork。 The kids seem way too old。 The story sometimes jumped, where I literally thought I had skipped a page or two。 But no page numbers, so hard to tell。 I didn't really like this adaptation。 Mostly I didn't like the artwork。 The kids seem way too old。 The story sometimes jumped, where I literally thought I had skipped a page or two。 But no page numbers, so hard to tell。 。。。more
